Yvonne Marie Forbes, 85, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2025.
Yvonne was born in Whitewood, Virginia, on October 6, 1939, the second of five daughters of John Edward and Olive Mariah (Compton) White.
She was a devoted, caring, and protective mom who enjoyed music, reading, and learning. She was also an affectionate, nurturing, fun-loving grandma who modeled the value of hard work, the power of resiliency, and the meaning of unconditional love.
She and her husband of 60 years, Bob, took great pride and comfort in their extended family and in their wooded property and log home in Millington, MI, turning the serene surroundings into a park-like retreat where she became a flower and plant enthusiast. Long summer days of gardening and yard work were often completed by resting on the expansive front porch of her dream home drinking cappuccino or tea, while her beloved wind chimes provided musical accompaniment for the idyllic setting.
While entertaining family and friends, she often shared stories and memories of her childhood as a coal miner’s daughter in western Virginia and on ancestral Compton Mountain; after her father’s death, her family moved to Michigan in 1955.
In her remembrances, she expressed deep love for her mother and sisters, and she reveled in extended family reunions she hosted at her Millington home and attended at Breaks Interstate Park in Virginia.
In addition to her parents, Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Robert A.C. Forbes; her sisters, Audrey Virginia White; Eleanor June White; Ruth Carol White; and Elizabeth Gail White; her daughter, Teresa Marie Johnston, and her infant son, Daniel Lewis Johnston.
Surviving children include sons Brian (Terri)Forbes of Davison; Jim Johnston of Flushing; Steve (Karen) Johnston of Burton; and Mark (Anne) Johnston of Minneapolis; and daughters Robin Burke of Castalian Springs, TN; Debby (Scott) Morrison of Hendersonville, TN; and Toni Wright of Hermitage, TN. Yvonne is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of a formal service, Yvonne will be honored in a private family celebration of her life at a later date.
