Bob was born in Flint, MI on July 18, 1927, weighing 2 ½ pounds, son of the late Sanford and Ethel (Dimond) Smith. Ruth was born in Flint, MI on April 13, 1927, daughter of the late Earl and Florence (Soper) Johnson. They were graduates of Mt. Morris High School Class of 1945. Bob “Romeo” married Ruth “Rusty” Johnson on February 22, 1947 at Mt. Morris Methodist Church. They enjoyed a true “love story” marriage, always working and playing together as a team. Together they owned and operated Smith’s Berry and Tree Farm for many years. He retired in 1982 after 30 years of service at Buick Motor Division. Bob and Ruth were members of Richfield Church of the Nazarene, where he served as young people’s president, church board member and greeter. Ruth taught kindergarten Sunday school classes for many years. She expressed her gift of hospitality in numerous ways, providing countless meals for pastors, family and friends, both new and old. Ruth deeply enjoyed the farm, gardening, sewing and trying new recipes as well as breeding and raising hundreds of puppies. Bob and Ruth served on several mission trips, and they happily provided the greenery for the huge Christmas sanctuary wreaths at the church. He enjoyed his Model T, Mustangs, VW, and Case and John Deere tractors. Ruth and Bob travelled extensively overseas after retirement. One of the most meaningful trips was to the Holy Land, where they enjoyed walking where Jesus had walked. Bob had a quick wit and great sense of humor, always ready with a joke. Even though he was blind the last few years of his life, he had his own ministry of encouraging others who had lost a spouse, or who simply needed to hear a friendly and caring voice.

Bob and Ruth are survived by; 4 children, Ann (Tom) Roat, Rod (Rose) Smith, Bob Smith and Colleen (Tom) Alward; daughter-in-law, Shirley Smith; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. They were preceded in death by their son, Fred Smith; daughter-in-law, Sherry and granddaughter, Tricia.
