RAY, Joan Michelle (Leclaire) - Of Flint, age 79, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at Genesys Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
A Memorial Service will be held 12:30pm Saturday, May 17, 2014
at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Visitation 11am Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Joan was born in Flint on August 14, 1934, the daughter of Earl and Opal (Ballard) Luckes. She spent most of her childhood in Fenton, Michigan , graduating from Fenton High School in 1952. Growing up she enjoyed riding her horse “Danny Boy”, figure skating and hunting and fishing with her father. As a young woman, she worked as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines, even logging in flight time towards her pilots’ license. She also worked for years at The Vogue in downtown Flint. She retired from J.L. Hudsons after 28 years of devoted service. Her last place of employment was in the circulation department of The Flint Journal.
Joan leaves behind her loving husband of 19 years, Gary “Mike” Ray, his sons, Mike Ray Jr., Matt Ray and grandsons, Gary and Nick.
She also leaves behind her remaining daughter, Rhonda Hicks Hurry of Grayling, MI and husband, Brian Hurry. Joan and Rhonda weren’t just mother and daughter, but also the very best of friends, spending many vacations together over the years, filled with fun, laughter and adventures. Rhonda’s father later remarried and had 3 wonderful children, Bobby, Kelly and Sharon who she loved like her own, a sign of her generous and loving heart. She also leaves behind her granddaughter, Danielle Nichole Hicks.
She loved life and knew no strangers. After retirement, she enjoyed her beautiful gardens and pool, fishing with her family, was an excellent cook, loved her cats, making crafts, vacationing and spending any time with her family and friends. She was active in The Neighborhood Watch Program and worked for years at the local elections.
A special note of thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors at Genesys MICU. Your compassionate and skillful care will always be remembered.
Joan loved flowers, but any donations in her name to the Humane Society of Genesee County would be appreciated.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Opal Luckes, grandparents, Everett and Bessie Ballard, son Scott A. Hicks and brother Earl Luckes, Jr.
