Stephenson, Mavis Marie of Flushing, age 93, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at Schnepp Senior Care and Rehab in St. Louis, Michigan. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday June 16, at Flushing Presbyterian Church. Pastor Paul Pfeufferwill officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. June 16 until the time of the service at 11 a.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mavis was born in McCool, Mississippi on April 3, 1929, the daughter of Henry and Lorena (Norris) Hunt. Her early years were spent on her family's farm, which gave her a love of the outdoors and a spectacular talent for gardening that lasted throughout her life.
She married William Thomas Stephenson on May 29, 1952, in Ethel, Mississippi. He preceded her in death on August 1, 1991. One of the first women in her community to pursue an education, Mavis graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with her bachelor’s degree. She worked as a Histotechnologist for over 30 years at Hurley Medical Center and taught clinicals at Hurley for the Histology program. In addition to her green thumb, she was a talented cook and an avid reader with a particular love of western and adventure stories.
Mavis is remembered for her kindness, her sense of humor, and her generosity toward family, friends and strangers alike. She was an active member at Parkland Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and Sunday School teacher and was later a member at Flushing Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her children, Thomas and wife Laura Savoie, Tim Stephenson, Jan and husband Dan Manning, Pam and husband Scott Mackenzie; grandchildren, Michael (Verna) Stephenson, Michelle Stephenson and husband Joe Rozwarski, Brian (Julie) Savoie, Kelly (Matt) Lenonen, Kevin (Jessica) Manning, Kaitlin Mackenzie, Kristen Mackenzie; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Dwayne (Geraldine) Hunt. |
