NELSON, Vivian Arlee (Christenson) - Of Flint, age 97, died Thursday, June 30, 2022 at her residence.

Vivian was born in Flint, Michigan on March 31, 1925 the daughter of Carl and Mabel Christenson. She lived her entire life in Flint, residing at just three addresses, all on the east side of the city. She married Warren L. Nelson on New Year’s Eve 1942. They were blessed with four beautiful children.

Vivian graduated with honors from Flint Technical High School, Class of 1943. Warren entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served on a submarine in the Pacific during World War II. Because of the war, many of Tech’s graduates who didn’t enter the military took jobs to aid the war effort. Vivian worked at Buick Motor’s Division. Positions she also held during her lifetime were Chevrolet Insurance Division, Secretary of State, Storkville Stores, Scott School and many years at Congregation Beth Israel and Macpelah Cemetery.

Vivian served several organizations: Treasurer and President of Flint Downtown Lioness Club. Two terms as National President of Wives of U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII, and Editor of Michigan Battle Stations Newsletter.

Vivian was a member of Central Church of the Nazarene where she regularly worshipped. She enjoyed the trips and other activities planned for the Seniors at Central including Game Day. Potluck on Game Day always contained a big serving dish of her macaroni and cheese.

Vivian enjoyed many hobbies among them ceramics, needlepoint and calligraphy. Her needlepoint projects brighten the homes of many family members and friends. Vivian enjoyed her Bunco group for many years. Their shopping trips and tea parties were such a joy and she dearly loved each member.

Leaving to cherish her memory are children, Judith L. May of Salt Lake City, UT, who often served as her caretaker; Robert W (Carolyn) Nelson of Flushing, MI; James R (Karen) Nelson of West Valley, UT; and Joanne L. Sayre of Centerville, UT.

Beloved grandchildren, April Richards, John (Andrea) May, Steven, Andrew (Kandace), Robert, Michelle, and Lawerence Nelson, Michele (Douglas) Backes, Anthony (Christina) Bueno, and Lonn Stanfill.

There are fourteen great-grandchildren; Christopher and Patrick Richards, Maddy Vincent, Joshua Morgan, Katherine and Sarah May, Alijah Caskinette, Victoria Nelson, Benjamin and Ella Joy Backes, Anabel and Katie Bueno, Gavin and Kenleigh Stanfill.

There are four great-greats; Savanah, Jerico, Braxton Richards and Ava Vincent.

Steve and Bethany Hack and their daughters Adopted Vivian as their grandmother as did the family of Roland Howes. Many wonderful memories of times spent with them made her happy. She is also survived by sister-in-law Shirley Fritzler and many nieces and nephews.

The family also thanks Marilyn and Dave Bundy for always being there for her and Carol Thorne for being her caregiver the last few months.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mabel Christenson, husband of 61 years, Warren L. Nelson, devoted companion for five years, Roland C. Howes, her only sibling, Donald C. Christenson and wife Jeanette, son-in-law, Kip Sayer. Three sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bob and Eunice Cotter, Don and Gladys Cassel and Alfred and Marian Keast, one grandson, James J. Nelson and caregiver Kathi Keast.

In memory of their mother, the family suggests contributions to either Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 W. Bristol Road, 48507 or Carriage Town Ministries.

Funeral service will be held 11am Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 West Bristol Road, Flint.

Visitation 1-8pm Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Visitation 10am Thursday at church until the time of the service.
