JAROU, EDWARD R.

Eddy was born on May 3, 1926 in Flint Mi. He attended Flint schools, starting with Jefferson Elementary then Emerson Junior High and Flint Technical High School. Following his graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in World War Two for two and a half years as a Sperry Ball Gunner on a B-24 Aircraft. He was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippine Islands. After serving, he returned home and attended Mott Junior College and graduated from Michigan State University. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree while he taught at the Baily Street School in East Lansing.

He returned to Flint in June of 1954 and taught in the following schools: Dewey, Gundry, Dort, Walker, Emerson, Coolidge and Freeman. During this period he was appointed Director of the Davison Summer Recreation Program and Served two years in this capacity. He then served as a Community School Director for many years.
He also served as an Administrative Assistant in the Better Tomorrow for the Urban Child program and taught Adult Education classes for the Mott Program.

He retired in June, 1991 after forty-one years in Education, thirty nine in the Flint Community Schools.
Mr. Jarou served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Elder at the First Presbyterian Church and was Assistant Director and then Director of the Church Family Camp at St. Mary’s Lake for two years.

In 1966 he received the “Man Of The Year Award” from the Michigan Federation of American-Syrian-Lebanese Club -“Amsyrleb Club.” He was a member of the Amsyrleb Club for almost 50 years and whose members he dearly loved.
Mr. Jarou married Margaret Berry on June 25, 1949. They were lovingly married for 62 years. She preceded him in death in 2011.

He is survived by his daughter, Jamelee and her husband Dr. Bill Ryckman, sons, John Kaiser Jarou and James Edward Jarou, grandchildren, Barbara (Tim) Lynn, Dean Ryckman, Mary Ann Jarou Thomas, Jessica Jarou, Dr. Zachary Jarou and great grandchildren, Amelia and Henry Lynn, and Ash Ryckman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kaiser Jarou, mother Ann Abdella Jarou, sister Barbara Jarou Shannon, son Jonathan Noel Jarou, nephew Robert Shannon and grandson, Joseph Jarou.
He loved spending time with his family, playing poker, telling jokes and being in the company of his friends.
He was a wonderful husband and father and a good man. He was much beloved and admired and we will always miss him but are comforted to know how many people felt deep affection for him.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

Visitation 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
