Jim was born in Flint, MI on August 7, 1951, son of the late Albert and Ruth (Rau) Freiheit. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970-1976. Jim retired from General Motors in 1989 after 17 years of service. Jim was a simple and caring man. He rarely asked for anything, yet gave to everyone. He was a giver of his time, his wisdom, his sense of humor, and his love, to all who took time to know him. He enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time at the family cabin, and time with his daughters and grandchildren. He kept busy, attempting to keep up with the lives of his two daughters, grandchildren, and 3 grandpups. He was often involved in all of the celebrations and hurdles they experienced in their lives. He was the advice giver, the problem solver, the person to lend a hand, and when needed, the one to lend an ear. He became a lover of dogs and often babysat Bear, Marley, and Bailey (his Granddogs). Jim loved the sound of a great thunderstorm, and often sat on his back aluminum covered porch in a lawn chair to watch and hear it rain. He was a man of simple gestures. He was the father we would call when needing help with a project last minute. He was the grandfather grandkids would call when they had a problem and needed to talk. He was our ROCK. We would often hear stories from him about rescuing turtles from the road, and his dreams of one day owning his own family cabin. When he wasn’t busy with his children and grandchildren, he enjoyed reading and watching Westerns on TV. Jim’s favorite series to watch and discuss with family, was “The Walking Dead”. He later received the DVD’s from his grandson, Brendan Hurley.
Jim is survived by 2 daughters, Rebecca Kuta and Jacqueline Hurley-Rinker; 4 grandchildren, Brendan Hurley, Olivia Hurley, Lauren Kuta and Ashlyn Kuta; 3 granddogs, Marley, Bailey and Sylvia Bear; 5 siblings, Sharon (Art) Goatbe, Judy Fike, Sue (George) Thomas, Tom (Judy) Freiheit and Steve (Janet) Freiheit; special “granddaughter”, Julianna Deming; many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ruth Freiheit.
