Barnett (Barney) Ellis Merrell, a cherished husband, father, papa, great papa, and veteran, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 4, 2026, at his home. Born on September 20, 1931, in Freeland, Michigan, to Medford and Julia (Barko) Merrell, Barney lived a full and meaningful life marked by dedication, service, and love.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Barney honorably served during the Korean War. His service was recognized with the Korean Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. Beyond his military commitment, he was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, reflecting a lifelong devotion to his country and fellow servicemen.
Following his service, Barney embarked on a rewarding career at GM Fisher Body, where he worked diligently as a Repairman until his retirement in 1988. Prior to his passing, he lived in St. Helen, MI, previous of Durand, Michigan, where he enjoyed a life enriched by beloved hobbies including fishing, hunting, woodworking, riding his side by side, crossword puzzles, Polka music, and his cherished breakfasts at Sam’s Diner with the “table of knowledge.”
Barney’s family was the cornerstone of his life. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife Marylyn on November 10, 1951, in Owosso, Michigan. Their union spanned 68 years until Marylyn’s passing in 2019. Together, they shared a remarkable life filled with love, commitment, and cherished memories.
He is survived by his devoted children: Denise (John) Adams of The Villages, Florida; Sherri (Rick) Hammond of Owosso, Michigan; Ken (Kathy) Merrell of Fenton, Michigan; and Kevin (Karen) Merrell of Lennon, Michigan. Barney took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to Joey (Beth), Sarah (Jason), Ryan (Amber), Amanda, Jessica, Andrea (Reid), and Johnny, as well as in his 12 great-grandchildren. Treasured friends, Rusty and Steve Hurren also mourn his passing and remember him fondly.
Barney’s legacy is further honored by the memory of those who have preceded him in death: his wife Marylyn, granddaughter Jayme Phillips, grandson Andrew Merrell, parents Medford and Julia Merrell, brother Bob, and sisters Rose, Ann, and Bonnie.
Beyond familial ties, Barney was known for imparting timeless lessons and joyful moments, especially evident in his tradition of teaching every grandchild how to fish—a skill that became a lasting symbol of his patience, knowledge, and love for the outdoors.
Family, friends, and all whose lives he touched are invited to pay their respects at the visitation on April 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life from 2:00 PM at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes, located at 702 N St Helen Rd, St. Helen, Michigan, 48656.
Barney Ellis Merrell’s life stands as a testament to devotion—to family, country, and community. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered with the utmost respect and affection by all who knew him.
