ETHINGTON, Catherine A. (Lucas) - Of Grand Blanc, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the age of 78. She was born November 2, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to James and Ann Lucas. Catherine attended high school in Chicago, Illinois, college at Mott Community College where she graduated receiving her Applied Sciences degree and Nursing certification. She became a Medical Case Manager at Recovery Unlimited. She began her career working for St. Joseph Hospital in Flint and then McLaren Hospital and Upjohn Health Services.
Catherine had five children from her marriage to R. Dwight Ethington April 14, 1956; James (Julie) of Petoskey, Ann of Haslett, Michael (Lisa) of Grand Rapids, Dan of Burton, Mary (Brian) Scoviac of Grand Blanc. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dwight of Ferndale, Paul (Taylor) of White Lake, Kayla of Oregon, Leah of Kalamazoo, Michael of Chicago, Amy of South Carolina, Kaitlin of Grand Blanc and Joshua of Grand Blanc. She is also survived by great grandson Lucas and step-grand-child, Isabella. Catherine leaves behind sister-in-law Helen Ethington and brother-in-law Kenneth Ethington and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Dwight Ethington; sister, Francis Smiejek, and brothers: James Lucas and Robert Lucas; brothers-in-law, Donald Ethington and Gary Ethington; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Ethington and Bobbie Ethington.
Catherine was a hard-working spiritual woman who devoted her life to helping other people. She enjoyed reading, gardening, travelling and spending time with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of the Holy Family Church and was a member there of CRHP. She volunteered her time at church, the community center and North End Soup Kitchen. She was a caring and giving person.
Catherine’s family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a Rosary Vigil at 7 p.m., Sunday August 24, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road in Flint. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2014 at the Holy Family Church, 11804 S. Saginaw St Grand Blanc. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta celebrant.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in her name to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
