Delaina was born in Flint, Michigan on December 28, 1957. She was the only child of Melvin and Shirley (Lewis) Oberman. She spent her early years with her cousins on Lake Fenton fishing and exploring. Even at an early age she was a gifted musician. She aspired to be like Bob Ralston on the Lawrence Welk Show and Josie at Walli’s Super Club in Flint. Her Dad bought her an organ when she was 9 years old. She went on to study piano and ultimately percussion. She graduated from Montrose High School and University of Michigan-Flint with a degree in music. Delaina was 19 years old when she began as a church organist. Delaina joined the FIM Flint School of Performing Arts percussion faculty in 1988. She served as Percussion Department Chair, Percussion Ensemble Coach, and Percussion Class and Lesson Instructor. Delaina often took her Exclamation! Percussion Ensemble to perform in Mackinaw City, and Indian River. The ensemble also performed for Advent services in churches. Delaina was a part-time Percussion Instructor at Mott Community College and conducted the percussion ensemble there when needed. She was a percussion adjudicator for Michigan Band and Orchestra Association solo and ensemble. She taught music at St. Paul Lutheran school and played organ for three Lutheran Churches. During her career she played with the Flint Symphony Orchestra, the Saginaw Eddy Band, Genesee Wind Symphony, the Carolyn Mawby Chorale and was a performing member for the St. Cecilia Society. She was also a past president, and scholarship chairman for the St. Cecilia Society. She loved to play percussion for shows. She played for shows at Saginaw Valley State University and for many Flint Community Theater productions. As a private lesson instructor, she was a mix of mother, cool aunt, a role model, a counselor, a trusted colleague and good friend. She taught hundreds of students about hard work, independence, responsibility, and teamwork. Mixed in with all of that was also learning how to play music. She was a master teacher with several students going on for doctorates in percussion. Delaina went above and beyond for her students, giving up her days off to attend her student’s performances, turning 30 minute lessons into 60 minute sessions, and making sure students knew about every scholarship opportunity. Although she didn’t have biological children, she had many, and her legacy lives on in them. The Sheehy family was blessed to have Delaina become part of the family over 25 years ago. She was a best friend and soulmate, sister, brother, daughter and aunt. Delaina was not a fancy person. She loved her tie dye t-shirts, Keen sandals and her Michigan sweatshirt. She was very bright, faith filled, a rebel, instigator, tenacious, stubborn, direct, fun, and had a heart of gold. She gained the respect of her fellow musicians, the undying gratitude of her students and the love of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving family, Kathleen and Pat Sheehy; Colleen (Sheehy), Steven, James and Molly Glynn; Janene (Lewis), Dav, Ryan (Elisha), and Eric Fast; Norene (Lewis) Newman; Michele, Emilee, and Abby Lewis, and many other extended family, friends, and students.

She was preceded in death by her parents Shirley (Lewis) and Melvin Oberman, Aunt and Uncle Janet and Roy Lewis, cousin Ken Lewis, adopted Father James Sheehy.
