ROOT, Janice Nean “Jan” (Garner) – of Davison, age 86, passed away on January 17, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison, MI 48423; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski celebrant. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 PM Monday, January 23, 2023 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd, Davison, MI 48423. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the Mass on Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Outreach East, in Janice’s memory.
Jan was born in Flint, MI on August 19, 1936, daughter of the late Eldon and Frances Garner. She graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1954 and attended Flint Junior College. Jan worked at the Genesee County Court House, where she developed lifelong friendships and continued to enjoy lunches with the “courthouse girls” throughout her life. She later worked at AC Spark Plug, where she met Charlie Root, the love of her life. Jan and Charlie were married on December 4, 1964 in Flint, MI and enjoyed many happy years together until Charlie’s death in 2001. Jan had a kind heart and was a natural-born caregiver and nurturer, which allowed her to be an amazing hands-on mother, grandmother and friend and have a positive impact and influence on her family and friends. She was the true center of her family and the one person who could always be counted on for support, advice and, of course, boundless praise and love. Jan was also a talented gardener and had a true passion for flowers, birds and animals. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, performances and recitals, where she was always their biggest fan! Jan cherished vacations with her family and visits to her Kansas City family and friends. Jan also had the good fortune to be surrounded and supported by the most wonderful friends, whom she also loved dearly. She was active in the Kearsley Athletic Boosters and volunteered at Outreach East. Jan was a member of St. John’s the Evangelist Church in Davison and served as a greeter for many years.
Jan is survived by daughter, Leslie (Rick) Donahue; son, Chris (Mary) Allard; step-sons, Gary (Ellen) Root and Duane (Gail) Root; grandchildren, Sarah Donahue, Allison (Tucker) Noyes, Dan (Sarah) Allard, Mike Allard, Matt Allard, Melissa (Steve) Allen, Andy (Tammy) Root, Joe Root and Laura Root;13 great-grandchildren, including her miracle great-grandson, Patrick; and many other dear friends; and her beloved dog, Macey. She was preceded in death by husband, Charles Root; parents, Eldon and Frances Garner; and brother, Kirk Garner.
