Darlene McKay, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and cherished member of the Flint community, passed away peacefully on January 7th 2025 at the age of 85. Darlene’s life was marked by her unwavering generosity, boundless love, and commitment to family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Darlene was born in Burton, MI on July 27th 1939. She graduated from Bendle High School in 1957, after which she worked in undercover security at Hudson’s Department Store in Flint then later pursued a career in barbering, graduating from Flint Barber College. She went on to own and operate the Westside Barber Shop in Flint for over 20 years, where she became known not only for her skill as a barber, but for her caring and giving nature. No matter how busy she was, Darlene always made time for others, never turning anyone away in need.
A deeply loving woman, Darlene saw the good in everyone and always sought to lift others up with kindness and encouragement. She had a creative spirit and enjoyed homemaking, finding joy in every small detail of her home and family life. She loved traveling, and Sunday afternoon drives. A talented seamstress, Darlene also loved playing games and watching movies with her family.
Above all, Darlene will be remembered for her spirit of selflessness and the joy she brought to every life she touched. Her love for her family, her ability to make others feel valued, and her infectious optimism will remain a legacy in the hearts of those who knew her.
Darlene’s spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her legacy of love, generosity, and joy inspire all who knew her to carry forward her example of kindness.
Surviving are children - Daughters: Debbie (Rick) Tidwell, Tammy (Mike) Moldenhauer, Kim (Jerry) Clark, and Son: Shane (Joann) Carpenter;
Grandchildren - Lee (Angie) Tidwell, Heather Tidwell, Ryan (Tiffany) Mack, Tony (Mylee) Mack, Scott Moldenhauer, Kenneth Hobson, Kristopher (Elizabeth) Hobson, Kameron Hobson, Kirston Hobson, Benjamin Clark, Damien (Chelsea) Carpenter, Alexis Carpenter, Sebastian Carpenter;
And 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held 12pm Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Visitation 11am Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
