Edith Maud Hagenstein, age 99, of Flint, Michigan passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

Edith was born on January 16, 1924, to the late Frederick and Mathilda (Lotz) Schultz in Madiun, Java, Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). During World War II, she survived the inhumane Japanese Internment Camp. In 1950, Edith immigrated to the Netherlands. She moved to the United States in 1956, and decided to make Michigan her home.

Since 1957, Edith has been a faithful member of Court United Methodist Church in Flint, Michigan. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women Society Club, Friendship Circle and Luncheon Club. During her life, she circled the globe and truly loved to travel. Some of Edith's other favorites included gardening and playing bingo, and she was a member of the Bingo Committee in Woodhaven as well. In addition, she was a longtime season ticket holder of the Flint Institute of Music. Edith also thoroughly enjoyed playing and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

Edith has many distant relatives in California, the Netherlands, Indonesia and Australia. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

The Hagenstein family would like to offer a sincere thank you to the people at Woodhaven, Brookdale, the Hospice team and Dr. Larry Braver for their excellent care of Edith.

Edith leaves behind to cherish her memory her children Aimee (Robert) Leighton of Flint Township, Gladys (Ron) Orr of Flint Township, Dr. Jeffry (Stephanie) Hagenstein of Flint Township, Dr. Henry (Susie) Hagenstein of Grand Blanc and Alan (Deanna) Hagenstein of Fenton; grandchildren Lisa, Stephanie, Heath, Scott, Heather, Kristen, Elizabeth, Rachel, Leah, Seth, Tristan, Keinan and Elan; fourteen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

Edith is preceded in death by her beloved husband August F. Hagenstein and daughters Renée and Joyce.


A visitation for Edith will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 W. Pierson Road, Flushing, MI. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM, at Court Street United Methodist Church, 225 W. Court St, Flint, MI. With a Funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM
