He was born March 11, 1937 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Menzo “Mike” Nieuwenhuis and Florence (Leestma) Nieuwenhuis.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Calvin College and Master’s Degree in Music from University of Michigan. Mr. Nieuwenhuis was a Music Teacher at Swartz Creek High School and Middle Schools for 25 years, and Mott Community College. He served as the Music Director for Fenton First Presbyterian Church for over 20 years.
He was involved in various shows at Clio Cast & Crew, and Christmas At Whiting. He was a member of the Genesee Wind Symphony (17 years), Flint Concert Band (12 Years), Genesee Valley Concert Band (25 years), and Flint Male Chorus (5 years)
Surviving are: son Dirk (Mary Procopio) Nieuwenhuis of Flint; and daughter Kristin Nieuwenhuis (aka Newhouse) of New York City. He was Opa to Katherine (Zach) Halverson, Chad Allen, Natasha Nieuwenhuis, Nadia Nieuwenhuis, Aidan Nieuwenhuis; and Great Grandfather of five.
He was preceded in death by wife Mary (Merrill) Nieuwenhuis; and daughter Dana (Ken) Nieuwenhuis Allen.
