Blackburn, James Gordon "Jim" – of Montrose, age 91, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at The Landings of Genesee Valley Senior Living. Funeral services will be held at 1PM, Saturday, December 30, 2023, at New Covenant Church - 13176 N Linden Rd, Clio, MI. Pastor Dan Shinabarger to officiate. Burial to Montrose Township Cemetery to follow. The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday, from 12PM until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Group of Michigan, or Covenant Hills Camp.
James was born September 22, 1932, in Hubbard Lake, Michigan, to the late Charles Blackburn, and Lillian (Smith) Karst. He attended and graduated from Spring Arbor Jr. College with the class of 1951. Jim then went on to further his education by attending Spring Arbor College, as well as Michigan State University where he received his Master’s degree. He was a United States Army Veteran serving his country during the Korean War. Jim married the love of his life Lois Beardslee on June 30, 1956. Jim dedicated 28 years of his life to shaping young minds as an Industrial Arts teacher in the Montrose School district, and later served as high school Guidance Counselor until his well-deserved retirement in 1989. Beyond his professional life, Jim was an active member of the New Covenant Church, where he found solace and joy serving his Lord Jesus as a Sunday School teacher, song leader, and board member. In his retirement, Jim served on several mission trips helping to build churches in other countries and made weekly visits to local nursing homes to lead devotions and singing with residents. In his free time, Jim loved fishing and hunting with friends and family and spent countless hours in fields and streams enjoying God’s creation. Jim also had a keen eye for capturing moments through the lens of his camera. He particularly enjoyed capturing images of birds and other wildlife.
Surviving are: Loving wife of 67 years, Lois Blackburn; Children: Elaine (Scott) Meyer, Karen (Matthew) Pearson, Ronald (Robin) Blackburn, and David (Jody) Blackburn; Grandchildren: Leslie (Josh) Priddy, Cheryl Meyer, Linnae (Keegan) Crosby, Eric (Jackie) Pearson, Gwen Pearson, Joel Blackburn, Alyssa Blackburn, Benjamin Blackburn, Jenna Blackburn; Great grandchildren: Oscar Priddy, Blair, Beckett, and Brooks Crosby, Ella Pearson; Nephew, Robert (Janet) Blackburn. He is preceded in death by his Father, Charles Blackburn; Mother, Lillian Karst; Stepfather, Maynard Karst; Brother, C. Robert Blackburn.
