Lawrence Cywin, a career veteran, and retired Commander in the U.S. Navy, passed away peacefully in Ava Maria, Florida on February 27, 2022. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Flint. Rev. Paul Ytterock will officiate. Burial to follow at 2 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Monday at church until the time of the service.

He was born June 27, 1928 and raised in Brooklyn New York. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Oregon State University, Navy Post Graduate School, Harvard Business School and Michigan State University. He had a successful career in the U.S. Navy, first joining NROTC in 1948 and being commissioned as an Ensign in 1952. He served in various capacities as a surface warfare officer on battleships, destroyers, and cruisers and was the Captain of the destroyer USS Waldron DD699. He finished his Navy service at the Pentagon and retired in 1972. After the Navy he worked as a management consultant until he accepted a position in 1978­­ as Director of Quality Improvement for the Administration of the Flint Community Schools and continued his work until he retired in 1995. He and his wife, Roberta, were active members and supporters of many arts and civic organizations, especially in the Flint community. He served as Deacon and Elder for the First Presbyterian Church of Flint.

He follows his late beloved wife and the love on his life, Roberta Cywin, his late daughter Tracey Kay Adkins and his late son Andy Hagan, and leaves his surviving children, Allison Cywin, Charles Cywin (husband of Rosemary Cywin), Robin Groff and also son-in-law Clay Adkins. He had eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, David Adkins (wife Annie and children Faith, Brook, Liam & Owen), John Adkins, (wife Amanda and children Harper & James), Lauren Clegg (husband Randy), Ellen Geoff (children Lillianna Lee, & Westyn), Alyssa Hyatt (children Heath & Raelyn), Calen Sandler (wife Mika), Kyle Sandler (wife Anna and children Levi and Tenzin) and Charles “Chas” Cywin.
