CORNELL, Matthew William, loving husband of wife Kim, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Flint on Monday, November 18, 2024 at the age of 66.
Matthew William Cornell was born on January 4, 1958 in Flint, Michigan to Robert Duncan Cornell and Mary Olive Cornell (Clark). Those who knew Matt knew he had a love of sports. His love for sports was evident from a young age in the New Lothrop schools where he excelled in high school football, basketball, and baseball. His talents on the baseball field led him to play for Michigan State University. MSU is also where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. He went on to earn an MBA from Cal State University Long Beach. Matt had a thirst for knowledge and continued to pursue his passion for learning and growth throughout his life.
A dedicated member of the community, Matt was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends and neighbors alike. He knew no strangers and loved to talk and share stories. Some of the best stories were always shared with family catching up at the annual Cornell reunion.
Matt was born with a passion and love for life. It was that same phrase “I love my life” that immediately attracted him to his wife Kim the first time they met. And for more than 20 years they shared their love for life together. They both shared a love for travel and enjoyed visiting destinations far and wide. True baseball enthusiasts, they made it a point to attend a game at all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. Other reminders for Kim of loving life together include Friday afternoon golf outings, bicycling and running, music nights, reading nights, hat nights, and puzzle nights, coaching girls’ basketball and weekly trips to the post together. They loved Christmas and, of course, the tree was up on November 1st again this year.
Matt had a deep faith in God through his daily devotions. (82 but now 100!)
He is survived by the love of his life and partner in all things fun, Kimberly (Bigelow) Cornell. His siblings, Catherine (Rick) Krupp, Patricia Williams, Christopher (Becky) Cornell, Gabrielle Bullock, Anastasia (Jim) Hofacker, Greg (Stephenie) Cornell and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Mary.
Matt will be remembered for his boundless energy, his deep love for his family and his unwavering commitment to those around him. He leaves behind a deep legacy of kindness, generosity, and a life well lived.
Memorial service will be held 5pm Monday, November 25, 2024 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Dr. Max B. Hayden officiating. Visitation 2pm Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt’s name and in honor of his mother Mary to Hospice House of Shiawassee County, 2005 Copas Road, Owosso, MI 48867.
