Those desiring may make contributions to “Pawsitive Cause Non-Profit Rescue” or “Streethearts Animal Rescue.” Jeff found great joy in fostering dogs through these rescues with his daughter, Emily, and future son-in-law, Derrick. As soon as he learned that a foster was getting adopted, he immediately wanted to know when the next animal in need would arrive.
Jeffery was born in Flint, Michigan on September 5, 1959, the son of Melvin and Sue (Tackebury) Hicks.
Jeffery retired from Meijer at a young age. He then followed in his dad’s footsteps by spending nearly 40 years in the insurance industry, with most of the years spent at Security First Benefits. He worked hard to provide for his family and treated every one of his clients with respect and love.
He was the best father. He spent every minute loving his daughters, grandchildren, and pets. You could not get through a conversation with Jeff without him mentioning how proud he is of his daughters. They meant everything to him, and he was everything to them. Jeff’s grandchildren will be left with wonderful memories such as leprechaun hunts on St. Patrick’s Day, board games, and living room sleepovers.
Jeff’s love of exercise was contagious. He found his passion for boxing when he was 50 years old, earning himself the nickname Father Time. He cherished working out with his daughter Adriane, the two of them always kept each other on track and shared their progress.
He passed his love of games to his daughter Rachel. Even though she lived far away, they always managed to play games virtually. He constantly wanted updates on Rachel’s current games and never missed an opportunity to show her how it was done in the old days.
The love Jeff held for his animals was amazing. He spoiled his dogs and cats. Walking the dogs in his favorite nature park was always the highlight of his day. He let his cats seep in bed with him every night, despite his allergies. Jeff also cared for all the stray cats in the neighborhood and was lovingly teased by friends and family for having the world’s chubbiest and spoiled feral cats.
His generosity will not be forgotten. Jeff sponsored Joe Byrd's Boxing Academy, multiple families for holidays, animal rescues, several churches, and more. He would have given a stranger the shirt off his back.
He was always the funniest person in the room; known for his dad jokes, generous spirit, and love for his family. He always said he would never sell his house because he wanted his daughters to have a home base to return to. To his delight, each of his daughters returned home at various points in time.
Surviving are his daughters, Adriane (James) Kohn, Rachel (Sarah Coen) Hicks and Emily (Derrick Houston) Hicks;
grandchildren, James, Jr. and Abigail;
mom, Sue Hicks;
sisters, Linda (Bill) Sanders, Karen (Kevin) Hicks and Sharon (Kim) Criner-Hicks;
mother of his children and good friend, Susan Rahn;
nieces and nephew, Sarah, Riley, and Juliet.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin.
