John was born in Portage, Pennsylvania on July 13, 1946, son of the late John and Julia (Olsick) Novak, Sr. He was a graduate of Flint Central High School Class of 1964. John married Susan Bissonnette on September 27, 1975, in Flint, MI. He dedicated his life to the art of carpentry, establishing himself as a respected and self-employed carpenter for over 50 years with his company, Carpentry by John Novak in Otisville, MI. His craftsmanship adorned homes and spaces throughout the community, a testament to his passion and skill, which he passed on to his son, John Novak III. John was not only a master carpenter, but also a member of St. John’s (Davison) and St. Mary’s (Mt. Morris) parishes for many years. John always enjoyed listening to Polka music after church. His strong faith was a guiding light in his life, shaping his actions and relationships. John's sense of humor and quick wit endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His infectious laughter and uplifting spirit brought joy to countless moments. Outside of his work, John found solace and joy in various activities. He shared precious moments hunting with his son, fishing with his grandsons, and exploring garage sales for hidden treasures. A green thumb, John had a love for gardening, cultivating thriving vegetable gardens that mirrored his zest for life. Known for his generosity, John was always willing to lend a helping hand. His willingness to give the shirt off his back to assist others made him a beloved figure in the community. Whether it was a construction project or a neighbor in need, John's compassion knew no bounds. A lover of the outdoors, John embraced camping and frequently embarked on journeys to his cabin up north. These adventures allowed him to connect with nature and create lasting memories with family and friends. Country music was the soundtrack to many of these trips, underscoring the beauty of life's simple pleasures. As we bid farewell to John Novak, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by dedication, love, and laughter. May his legacy inspire us to embrace each day with the same passion and kindness that defined his journey. He was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed watching sports on television. John was a little gruff around the edges, but deep down was so loving, kind, and sincere.
John is survived by his wife, Susan Novak; 2 children, Wendy (David) Upthegrove and John (Laurie) Novak III; 5 grandchildren, Riley Upthegrove, Dylan (Alyssa) Upthegrove, Brendan (Eliza) Upthegrove, Bobby Macciomei and Ashlee (Jason) Thompson; 2 great-grandchildren, Casey Thompson and Levi Upthegrove; 4 siblings-in-law, Dennis Bissonnette, Thomas Bissonnette, Karen Stohon and Donald Bissonnette; special cousin, Jimmy Olsick; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Don Niles; many other loving family members and good friends.
