Ralph William Evert -- July 13, 1914, to Sept. 26, 2010

Ralph William Evert graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit in 1932 with a keen interest in aeronautics.

His family having moved to Fenton, Mich., Ralph met and married Frances Irvin, a classmate of his sisters', Irene and Marian, in 1940.

Ralph worked for Uniroyal as a design and drafting engineer until 1965. His contributions at the company included invention of the FISK tire gauge and work vital to WWII war efforts among which was a project involving the development of the B29.

After moving to Farmington, Mich., in 1953, Ralph joined the volunteer police department. This effort resulted in his election as constable of Farmington Township. His hobby of photography had soon grown into a business. Retirement from Uniroyal led Frances to join him in forming a company that served the local newspaper for photo processing as well as delving into forensic photography and photo journalism.

After their 1979 move to Michaywe, continuing volunteerism brought "Mr. Ralph" to the wood shop class at Gaylord High as a teacher's assistant, a position he loved.

Cherished wife Frances was taken by cancer in 2004. Ralph relocated to Independence Village in Petoskey where he spent his last years in comfort and community.

Ralph Evert is survived by his two daughters, Yolande (Mrs. Robert Waldie of Charlevoix) and Charlene (Mrs. Donald Roman of Danville, Calif.) and six grandchildren, Robin Waldie Bennett (Petoskey), William Waldie (Bloomfield Hills), Eric Roman (Antioch, Calif.), Steve Roman (Tallinn in Estonia), Erin Waldie Markwardt (Brighton) and Noelle Yuri Roman (Concord, Calif). Blessed by seven amazing great-grandchildren, Ralph's life was enriched by his many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and his brothers of the Masonic Lodge.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Winchester Funeral Home, Charlevoix.
