Howard Joseph Bueche
12/21/1926 – 1/20/2022

Howard J. Bueche passed away of natural causes at home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his cherished wife of 69 years, Virginia (Kirchman); children, Mary Kay (Gregory Barkley), Jerry (Marie Hoy), Matthew (Kim Lindenmuth), Gregory (Betty Hampilos), and Michael (Rhonda Grimshaw); grandchildren, Shelly (Sam Dahlke), Daniel (Allison Davis), Carrie (Ian Lopez), Brian (Jessica Messerschmidt), David (Samantha Kopas), Laura (Patrick McKinney), Christian, James and Leo; and great-grandchildren, Isaac, Jacob, Elliott, Abigail and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Catheryn Bueche; his siblings, Maynard, Mary Virginia (Cosgrove), Wendell and Philip Bueche; and an infant son, John.

Howard was born in Flushing and graduated with honors from Flushing High School in 1944. He was Senior Class President, lettered in three sports, and was captain of the championship basketball team. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps after graduation and served 1944-1946. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he earned an associate degree at Flint Junior College (now Mott Community College), where he also played on the varsity basketball team. He was then accepted into the University of Detroit School of Law, where he was recognized by the professional law fraternity Gamma Eta Gamma for earning the freshman highest grade point average. He also served as an assistant editor for the Law Review, was elected Vice-President of his senior class, and was invited into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national honor society of Jesuit universities. Howard received his J.D. degree in 1951.

A lifelong Flushing resident, Howard practiced law in Genesee County for 62 years. He served as president of the Genesee County Bar Association, and as a Director and Trustee of Peoples State Bank and Genesee Bank (both now part of the Chase Bank system). He served as general counsel for St. Joseph Hospital and its successor, Genesys Regional Medical Center.

As a prominent member of his community, Howard served as President of the following associations: Flushing Board of Education, Genesee County Easter Seal Society, Flushing Library Association, Saint Robert Men’s Club, and Flushing Community Council, and as attorney for the Charter Commission for the Village/City of Flushing. He was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus award by the Flushing Community Schools and by Mott Community College.

Howard believed it a great privilege to be an active member of the legal community, a profession he held in high esteem. He was justifiably proud of the law practice that he and his partner Marvin Failer established in Flushing (currently Bueche, Failer, O'Callaghan & Zintsmaster). He also received an AV Preeminent Peer Rating, indicating that he had demonstrated the highest degree of professional excellence and was recognized for the highest levels of skill and integrity.

Howard felt that his greatest life fortune was his marriage to his beloved wife Ginny. He was also inordinately proud of his children and their spouses, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was especially pleased that all his offspring genuinely enjoy spending time together as an extended family. His interests included skiing, tennis and golf. He and Ginny took many exciting trips to Europe and the Americas together, and sponsored family vacations in Florida, Mexico and Hubbard Lake.

The Bueche children and grandchildren will remember Howard for his devotion to his family and to his faith, for his peerless integrity, and for his enviable story-telling talents. Virginia describes Howard as “the love of my life”.

A private funeral service will be held, however, a live stream of the funeral will be available at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022, through the Rossell Funeral Home Facebook page or by following the link below. Condolences may also be shared on the Rossell Funeral Home website. A public Celebration of Life is planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Robert Bellarmine Parish (strobertparish.weshareonline.org), the Flint Institute of Arts (flintarts.org/join-and-give/ways-to-give) or the Foundation for Mott Community College (mcc.edu/foundation).
