Charles was born on January 30, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, Charles lived a life rich in purpose and love. After high school graduation Charlie went right into trade school and completed his 2 years of apprenticeship for plumbing and became a journeyman and very skilled in his trade, earning the title of supervisor. Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1965 serving overseas, as a plumber, where he earned the esteemed title of a Seabee. His commitment to service laid the foundation for a work ethic that he carried throughout his life. After his military service, Charles became an exceptionally skilled industrial plumber and pipefitter for Flint Plumbers and Pipefitters Industry with UA Local 370, earning respect and admiration as a supervisor. Charlie was a very intelligent man and was always giving out good advice and wisdom. He was grateful and enjoyed life and encouraged everyone to joke and laugh every day. A true sports enthusiast, Charles excelled in his youth, playing basketball, running track, and proudly leading his football team as captain. He maintained a lifelong love for sports, particularly women's basketball, which he watched with enthusiasm.
He was passionate about woodworking, building, farming, and fishing. He proudly built barns, large and small homes, churches, and summer kitchens, from blueprints to finishing work from the ground up. His love for gardening and canning was matched only by his affection for recently raising ducks. In his youth he was prideful in being an award-winning 4H member who cherished his pigs and lambs. He loved growing up on the family farm working with his pop and spending time at his mom’s restaurant. A true adventurer at heart, Charles frequently sought out new experiences, whether at a rummage sale, an auction, or while traveling to family reunions to Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arizona. Charlie enjoyed a good trip to the casino where he enjoyed blackjack and every week he would play euchre and craps with family, he loved spending time with his family. He approached each day with a desire to learn, often immersing himself in the wealth of knowledge available through platforms like YouTube. Charlie was known as the Chef of the Community Lighthouse Church; he drove the family members to church and served in the Church as well. Above all, Charlie’s love for his family shone brightly in all that he did. His family was his world, and he was very proud of his family. His warm smile and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and kindness that will never be forgotten.
