HERHOLD, Herbert Otto – Of Swartz Creek, age 89, died Thursday, October 12, 2023 at his residence.
Herb was born in Flint, Michigan on March 20, 1934, the son of the late Otto and Sophie Herhold. Herb was a graduate of Flint Northern High School and General Motors Institute (Kettering University). He married his high school sweetheart Barbara in 1955. They were married for 64 years before her death in 2019. Herb served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Olmsted. He began his 35-year career at General Motor’s V-8 Engine Plant in Flint as a Master Mechanic and retired as a General Foreman. In their retirement, Herb and Barb established Herhold Farms at their Fenton home. For more than 20 years, they operated a choose and cut Christmas tree farm and wintered in Florida.
Herb was predeceased by his parents and his wife Barbara. He is survived by sons Michael (Linda), Mark (Eleanor), Matt (Elizabeth) and daughter Melissa (Kerry) Olinger, six granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
Visitation will be at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 3-7pm. Visitation will also be held at 10am Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1025 Main Street in Fenton with the funeral service at 11am with Pastor Peter Ahlersmeyer officiating. Internment at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Herb’s wonderful caregivers who provided for his care and comfort, especially Donna Augustine, Rose Szwed and Kelly Vliet.
