Joan Maxine McKenzie

Born: 8/21/1930
Died: 1/12/2025
Age: 94
Community: Clio, MI

Joan Maxine McKenzie was born on August 21, 1930, and fell asleep in death on Sunday, Jan 12, 2025, with family at her side at the age of 94. A lifelong resident of Genesee County, Joan was born to parents Leo and Donna Clark of Clio. She attended Mt Morris Public Schools, and it may have been there she caught the eye of one Bernard McKenzie, and they were eventually joined in marriage on July 19, 1947.

Bernard and Joan welcomed six children into their family. They also in time operated Water Wonderland Sporting Goods on Dort Hwy in Mt Morris and built their family getaway, a cabin at Pine Stump Junction near Newberry in the U.P.

On February 25, 1967, Bernard passed away unexpectedly leaving Joan with the challenge of picking up the family reins where she proved herself to be a woman of quiet dignity and strength. As stated in the words of one of her favorite poems, she was able to “meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same.” Seamlessly traversing the stages of life.

Joan found joy in the simple things. Observing Great Lakes freighters and lighthouses, looking out over an ice-covered lake or watching colorful birds at the feeder. Always in awe of the design and artistry found in nature. She was also an avid reader who loved to share what she had learned. This was especially true with regard to the Bible. Joan was devoted to her God Jehovah and had solid faith in His promise of a peaceful future (Psalm 37:10-11, 29.)

Joan is survived by her six beloved children: Frank (Shirley) McKenzie, Sandra Molloseau, John (Joan) McKenzie, William (Cindy) McKenzie, Robert (Marion) McKenzie and Kathy (Allen) Scharrer,13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and her siblings Michael (Cindy) Clark and David Clark.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Leo (Donna) Clark, sister Norma Martin and brother Robert Clark.

Joan was a true friend with a listening ear, a dry sense of humor and a contagious laugh. Many have enjoyed her creative gifts, intricate needlepoint or time listening to her play the piano and organ. She loved her family and appreciated all that was done on her behalf over the years once telling a relative “I have never felt alone.”

There will be a Memorial service held on Saturday Jan 25, 2025, at 3 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2368 W Dodge Rd, Clio, MI 48420. (The service will be provided on video conference as well, please contact a family member a couple days before to receive the login information.)

The family would like to express gratitude and appreciation to Valley Area Agency on Aging, Cranberry Park Memory Care and Swan Hospice for their assistance with so many things in so many ways over the last year and a half.

Thank you so much.

Joan's obituary was lovingly written by her family.
