Born on December 8, 1921 in South Boardman, Michigan, Bernice was the oldest of eight children, born to the late James and late Mary Beth McCuaig.
Bernice graduated from Cadillac High School in 1940. She moved to Flint in 1941.
She married Leo Yaklin and they had a son, Robert, in 1945.
Bernice began working for AC Spark Plug in 1950, she worked on multiple lines during her 30 years of employment.
Upon retirement, Bernice did not slow down. She and her husband Jim (Ernest) Murphy stayed busy by volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, Michigan, Bayonnette Point Hospital in Hudson, Florida and Ascension Genesys in Grand Blanc. Bernice continued volunteering at the North End Soup Kitchen and Holy Family Catholic Church and School even after Jim's passing.
Bernice attended St. Charles & Helena, and Holy Family in Grand Blanc regularly. She was active in the 55 and Over Club at Holy Family and the Prayer Shawl Group at St. Mary's in Swartz Creek. Like her parents and many siblings, she was a member of the American Legion Post 300 out of Lake City. She also was a VFW #822 in Grand Blanc member.
In her spare time, she would knit, crochet, and do word searches. She enjoyed watching the cars at Back to the Bricks just this summer.
Family was always a priority for Bernice. She very much looked forward to the McCuaig family reunions each year. Family dinners happened regularly, as well as breakfasts with the church family after mass on Sunday. She lived vicariously through her grandchildren and then great-grandchildren frequently attending recitals, school performance, competitions, Boy Scout activities and marching band events. As recently as last month she took a road trip with Katelyn and Coby to Grand Rapids to attend her niece's wedding. Carl and Sam would read their favorite books aloud to their great-grandma. she enjoyed visits, phone calls, and cards from family and friends.
Bernice is survived by her granddaughters: Coby Yaklin, Michele (John) Shonka, and Amy (James) Lewis; her great-grandchildren: Carl, Samuel, Nathan, Katelyn, Ryan (Cashell), Zachary (Brianna), Tristan, and Kayla; five great-great-grandchildren, plus one on the way; step-son Michael (Anna) Murphy; sisters: Arlene Kimble and Thelma Slocum; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
