Community: Flint, MI

OSBORNE, Jimmy Joe – of Flint, MI, age 86, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to The Care Team Hospice or The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Michigan, in Jimmy’s memory.

Jimmy was born in St. Charles, Virginia on October 4, 1935, son of the late Oscar and Pearly Mae (Hale) Osborne. He spent his childhood and early years in the mining camps of southwest Virginia. Jimmy had many happy memories of brothers and sisters and loving parents. He decided at a young age that coal mining was not for him, so he married his sweetheart, Charlotte Smith, and came to Michigan to work for GM. After some early struggles, the young couple began a family and Jimmy became interested in the UAW. He was service minded and became a highly respected committee man and then a local president of Grand Blanc 1292. After twelve years as president, Jimmy was appointed to the International Union where he finished out his career of forty-two years with an unwavering support of the union and its members. His loss is a loss that should be mourned by all who have benefited from union membership and the absolute democratic ideal. Jimmy’s reliance on God and the importance placed upon his Christianity cannot be overemphasized. He was a believer and his faith brought him through on a regular basis. Jimmy loved his garden and took great pride in its yield and was very generous with what it produced. He was an avid runner for many years and could regularly be seen running his four-mile route. Jimmy ran the Crim several times, then when he’d reached an age that he had to give up the running he immediately took up biking, routinely biking twenty-five miles a day. He enjoyed very few pastimes as much as golf and played every chance he got. Jimmy was a kind and caring family man who cherished his loved ones.

Jimmy leaves his wife of sixty-five years, Charlotte Osborne; his 2 daughters, Debbie (Ron) Crank and Vicki (Jim) Blakemore; daughter-in-law, Darby Chambers; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; his beloved dog, Jake, hopefully they will be reunited someday; two sisters, Freda Johnson and Beulah Mozingo; brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Lois Dearlove; brother-in-law, Harold (Marilyn) Smith; many nieces and nephews with special emphasis on James (Karen) Dearlove and Alan (Patty) Dearlove; numerous other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Pearly Mae Osborne; son, Gary Osborne and several siblings.

The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the staff at The Pines of Burton Memory Care and The Care Team Hospice for their compassionate and professional care of Jimmy. We’ve lost a man of integrity and the world is a lesser place because of it.
