Zelma Irene Sexton, age 106 of Durand, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Durand Church of the Nazarene, 9725 E. Monroe Rd. Durand, MI 48429. Pastor Michael McCarty will be officiating with interment at Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. Irene's family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday at the church 1 hour prior to the service.
Irene was born March 14, 1907 in Shiawassee County, the daughter of Jesse and Catherine Alchin. She was a graduate of Durand High School. On May 31, 1958, she married LaVerne Sexton in Caro, Michigan. He preceded her in death.
She was a life long member of the Durand Church of the Nazarene. She also worked as Secretary to the Director of Nurses at McLaren Hospital in Flint for 16 years. After her husband retired in 1967 they moved to St. Cloud, FL where they lived for 23 years. During that time she was the church organist and her husband was the music director at the Nazarene Church. Due to his ill health, they moved back to Durand in 1990.
Mrs. Sexton is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Ed) Morey of Swartz Creek, daughter-in-law, Bessie Sexton of Durand and step-son, Donald (Beverly) Sexton of Brighton; 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LaVerne, both parents, step-son, David Sexton and sister, Nita Lapp.
