GRUNOW, BARBARA ANN (DeGroat) - Byron, MI, formerly of Columbiaville, age 74, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, July 17, 2014. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 4PM Saturday, July 26, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd. with visitation beginning at 3PM. Barb was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose passions included attending her grandchildren’s sporting, dance and music events and traveling with her husband throughout the U.S. and Europe. She especially loved Austria and Italy. Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles and finding a good bargain at a garage sale. She was always up for a good game of euchre and delighted in beating her husband at cribbage. For more than 40 years, she treasured the times spent with her dear friends from bunco club. Above all, what meant the most to Barbara throughout the years was spending time with her loving family. She is survived by Dieter, her adoring husband of 23 years; daughters, Brenda DeGroat and Becky (DeGroat) Wakeman; son, Bernie (Lori) DeGroat; stepchildren Diana (Grunow) Bennett, Richard (Mary) Grunow, Patricia (Mark) Grunow Sprague and David (Karla) Grunow; grandchildren Jack, Kerry, Kelly, Graham, Leslie, Lauren, Griffin, Justin, Jared, Bryce, Cameron, Jillian, Alexis, Andrea and Caitlin; sister Shirley (Bob) Nieman; brother Danny (Dorothy) Lake; sister-in-law Darla Haggadone; and mother-in-law Virginia DeGroat. She also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews and numerous lifelong friends. Barb was preceded in death by husband Bernard V. DeGroat; parents Victor and Mildred Lake; sister Norma Thomason; father-in-law Heinz Grunow; father-in-law Bernard E. DeGroat; sister-in-law Bernadine Clark; and beloved nephew Bobby Nieman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, in Memory of Barbara Grunow, 230 E Ohio St, Ste 304, Chicago, IL 60611.
