Forbes, Carolyn Elaine “Pippi” of Minnesota, formerly of Flushing, passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at her home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Rossell Funeral Home. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at 1 p.m.

Carolyn, known to most as Pippi, was born on March 24, 1999, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Pippi was immediately placed in an orphanage where she remained for almost four years. She was adopted by her mother, Jane Forbes, of Flushing. She came to the United States on February 26, 2003, a month before her fourth birthday. Pippi had many challenges to overcome in her short life. Her early profound neglect posed the greatest problems for Pippi. She persevered and was determined to make a good life for herself. Pippi never met a stranger; she made friends wherever she went.

Her hobbies included music, knitting, crafting, and most memorably, bargain-hunting. She tried to hit every garage sale in Flushing, driving around in her power wheelchair. She was so charming that most people didn’t charge her. The house was always filled with treasures that she gave as gifts or resold in her own garage sales. She would take this entrepreneurial spirit with her into adulthood and was pursuing a career in real estate. She landed several jobs in customer service, which was a perfect fit for her magnetic personality. Her first job was at the Hallmark store in Flushing. Pippi was very thoughtful and generous. She recently bought a warm coat for a coworker who could not afford one. She said that it’s too cold in Minnesota to not have a warm coat.

Pippi had a wonderful sense of humor, but never at the expense of someone’s feelings. She learned to cuss a little from her mother and was proud of the fact that she’s been drinking coffee since the age of four; it’s no wonder baristas at Starbucks knew her by name. Pippi was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was fiercely independent, fearless, and ambitious. A natural-born explorer, Pippi loved to travel and go on adventures. A year and a half ago, Pippi moved to the Twin Cities, Minnesota to be near her sister, Julia. They were not only sisters, but best friends.

There were many angels in Pippi’s life: her dear friends Austin and Michaela Davert of Bay City; Lisa Witzman of Flushing; Delores Corning, Carolyn Hall, and Casey Cronin, who all loved, guided, and protected her at school; principals and teachers of Flushing Community Schools who always treated people with respect, she counted them as dear friends; Dr. Michelle Caird and staff who cared for Pippi’s fractures; Dr. Joan Marini from NIH, where Pippi received treatment for the past 18 years; Joan was so proud of her; JoAnne Gossett, Pippi’s dear friend who took her to the Salvation Army store to shop, Pippi’s beloved Aunt Elaine and her daughters, Meghan and Laura, and her dear friend Leigh Ann; her boss at Hallmark, Kyle, who was a great friend and mentor, and many other friends far too numerous to mention.

Pippi leaves to cherish her memory, her mother Jane Forbes, her sister Julia Forbes, and brother John “Georgie” Forbes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family towards a memorial in Pippi’s honor. Heaven has gained another angel. Give ‘em Hell on Wheels, Pip.
