Died: 1/1/2011
Age: 78
Community: Grand Rapids, OH

William F. Kniss, Sr., 78, of Grand Rapids, OH, died January 1, 2011 at his home. He was born October 7, 1932 to Benjamin F. and Lillian (Abrams) Kniss in Wauseon, OH. He married Georgette A. (Van Den Berghe) October 11, 1952, she survives.

Bill started working in the Optical business in the early 1950’s for Toledo Optical. While working he juggled Toledo Optical by day, 6 children, and night college courses and various other part time jobs. He was very much a family man always making time for his children and their activities. He never complained about any part of his life at all. Bill had a very strong work ethic and always gave 200% in his work as an optician. In 1985 he and his wife graduated with honors together from Monroe Community College with Associate Degrees.

As his children were growing up he took an active role in their lives by being a Boy Scout Leader for several years. He went on many camping and canoe trips and outings with his family. Boy Scouts was a family affair for him and he enjoyed every minute. After his children graduated from school his wife and him went on several trips to Guatemala and the Ukraine to fit people with glasses that could not afford them. He was generous with his time and enjoyed his work. He was involved with the VOSH group that took trips to poorer countries to donate time and skill to provide someone less fortunate.

Bill is survived by his wife of 59+ years, Georgette, children, William Jr. (Denise) Paul (Elena), Dan, Tim (Donna), Alice (Mike) and Ben (Michele), 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, sisters, Betty Collins and Norma Schaub and brother, Ken (Flo) Kniss.
