She was born on December 30, 1929, in Smiths Creek, Michigan, to Evelyn M. Zimmer (Bower). She was raised by her grandparents, Walter Nicklos and Mary Alice Zimmer (Martin). She grew up in a large family with seven siblings. She also was blessed with half-siblings Karen Zorney (Bower) and John (Sandy) Bower. Dorothy attended St. Stephens High School and Port Huron Business College.
After meeting at the Flint Toby Club, Dorothy ‘Dot’ married William ‘Bill’ Stuart Hayes on May 18, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Huron, Michigan. Dot and Bill made their home in Flint and had four children, William, Thomas, James, and Kathryn, better known in their neighborhood as Billy, Tommy, Jimmy, and Kathy. Bill (Norma), Tom (Sherry), Jim (Susan), and Kathy gave them 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Dot loved to travel and spend time with her family. While the children were young, they camped across all 48 contiguous states in their ‘69 Chevy Suburban. After that accomplishment, Dot and Bill traveled to the final two states and explored Europe together.
Dot enjoyed life and had a contagious laugh! She loved playing cards with her Bridge Club, happily joined her husband on 50-mile bike rides, and regularly attended St. John the Evangelist Church in Davison. Some of her favorite things were campfires, playing card games, hiking, tennis, and trying anything new that sounded fun. She never lost her sense of adventure.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 59 years, Bill (deceased 2-17-2017), great granddaughter Hope Moon (deceased 10-16-2016), and numerous friends and relatives. She has blessed her family and anyone who knew her. She made friends everywhere she went, making everyone laugh with her fun-loving spirit. She will be dearly missed.
