Nancy was born in Marquette, Michigan on December 6, 1930, the daughter of Nellie (Walsh) & Charles Arenz. She graduated from Baraga High School in Marquette, MI, and went on to graduate from Northern Michigan University with Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She taught elementary education in several school districts in Michigan and Indiana, in an extensive career spanning four decades. She was most proud of teaching children to read and felt that that this was the most important thing she did as a teacher, touching the hearts and inspiring the minds of many young students throughout her teaching career. She retired from the Carman-Ainsworth School District in 1991. She married David A. Gass on August 21, 1954, in Marquette, Michigan. They made Flint, Michigan their home in 1956 and raised their six children there. She was often heard to remark during her life that the things she was most proud of were marrying David, having six children, and adoring her nine beloved grandchildren. Well known throughout the neighborhood for her delicious baked goods that she happily shared, she was also a talented musician who could carry a tune and play the piano, and enjoyed singing and playing at family gatherings, especially during the holidays.
She is survived by her six children, Lawrence A. Gass (Bernadette Gendernalik) of Harrison Township, Michigan, Mary Ellen Kendrick of Cape Canaveral, Florida, Katherine A. (Tom) Kowalski of South Bend, Indiana, Thomas D. (Pam) Gass of Saline, Michigan, Susan M. (Brian) Clegg of Davison, Michigan, Steven C. (Brenda) Gass of Birch Run, Michigan, and nine beloved grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, John Arenz of Marquette, Michigan, cousins Kathleen Lulich of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Joseph Chaput of Chicago, Illinois, and by her nephews John Birch (Tanya) of Tampa, Florida and John Arenz (Barbara) of Seattle, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband David A. Gass in 2014 and will be laid to rest beside him at The Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
