Vaughter, Sr., Dennis 12/8/1928 - 4/15/2022 Burton Dennis Lee Vaughter, Sr. passed away peacefully at home with family on Good Friday, April 15, 2022. He was born on December 8, 1928 in Appomattox, Virginia. He was an only child to Anderson and Alice Vaughter in Clifton Forge, Virginia. He grew up very close to his cousin, Joan Vaughter. He considered her his honorary little sister. His biological mother, Pamela Patterson, passed away from typhoid fever very shortly after his birth. Anderson was a relative of Pamela's. Dennis was a proud veteran who served in the Army as an Artillery Captain during the Korean War. He graduated from West Virginia State College, majoring in Agriculture. In college, he taught himself how to play tennis, and joined the college team. In 1959 he married Emmajean Brown. He worked for many years in the United States Post Office before transferring to a thriving Flint. Emmajean and Dennis had one child, Dennis Jr., and were together until 1964. After moving to Flint he worked in Probate Court. He was deputized during the Detroit Riots, and later became the Chief Probation Officer. In 1979, Mayor Rutherford gave him a key to the City of Flint. Throughout his life he overcame countless barriers. He was the first in his family to go to college, and had been the one and only black captain in his unit of the Army. In 1978, Dennis married Margaret Reagan, an Irish-German Catholic woman from Minnesota, approximately 10 years after the Loving v. Virginia ruling. Dennis and Margaret had one child, Pamela. They were married for over 30 years, and were inseparable until her unexpected death in 2009. Dennis and Margaret enjoyed gardening and traveling together. They were very active members of Christ the King Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler, and was active in several leagues across the county until the pandemic hit. One of his greatest personal accomplishments was bowling two perfect 300 games. He taught himself to play the guitar, and he loved jazz and blues. He loved to collect antiques, and enjoyed watching tennis, basketball, and football. He was preceded in death by ex-wife Emmajean Brown (married 1959-1964), and wife Margaret Reagan Vaughter (married in 1978). Surviving are his two children, Dennis Vaughter, Jr. (Latrina) of Otisville, Michigan, and Pamela Vaughter Carpenter (Todd) of Oak Park, Illinois. He loved taking the train to visit Pamela and Todd, and always enjoyed his time in Chicago. He leaves behind two grandchildren, Latavius Vaughter, and Chloe Margaret Carpenter. Dennis loved being a grandpa, and was scheduled to move in with Pamela and Todd this July to be closer to Chloe. The funeral will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1811 Seymour Avenue, Flint, MI 48503, on Friday at 1:30 pm. Family hour will be held at 12:30 pm. In order to help keep everyone safe, the family requests that those attending the service wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Jackson Chance Foundation http://www.jacksonchance.org
