David was born July 16, 1949, to the late Donna (Taylor) and Leroy Dale Dumond. He grew up on a farm in Carland, Michigan with his younger siblings, Larry and LuAnn. On the farm, David learned how to work hard, which was an attribute that followed him for an entire lifetime. After graduating from Ovid-Elsie High School, David’s interests followed a path of speed – namely motorcycles and horses, neither could be “too fast”. In addition to speed, David sought adventure. As a young man, his quest for adventure was filled in the United States Army, he served as a Sergeant, stationed in Dachau, Germany, from April 1969 to February 1971. There, his skillset was in heavy artillery and a marksman. His grandsons loved to hear the stories of how their “Popper” could shoot the flame off of a candlewick. Returning to the states from active duty, Dave brought home a fluency in the German language, and the anguish of war. While in the Army, David got the news that his beloved teenage sister, LuAnn, passed away tragically. LuAnn’s passing ignited a passion and mission to value life, love endlessly and serve without question. Post army, Dave’s career path started at the General Motors Fisher Body Plant, transferring later to the SPO in Swartz Creek and retired in 2006. In life, Dave knew no strangers and made friends with ease, a trait that proved to be most beneficial, a co-worker friend, Jim Jimerson at Fisher Body introduced him to what became his “home church”, Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle. At the church, a brown-eyed beauty and single mom of a toddler named, Charita, caught his eye. Charita’s mom, Charis McKinnies, was his dream come true. On June 26, 1976, he married Charis and overnight became a husband and father. Everyone knew the bride as, “Charis”, but he forever called her “my little lady”. Soon after marriage, the little family of three was welcoming a baby, a little boy named Jeremy David, who they got to hold for a short time before he met his Maker. This season of heartbreak bound them closer together in faith, strength and love, instilling a resolve to value life even more. By this time, young Charita had Daddy wrapped around her finger. True to the ways of the God that Dave served, every storm has a rainbow that follows. Not long after Jeremy, a baby girl was on the way – they named her, Tamara, and she proved that her Daddy’s heart and love had no boundaries. Now he had “a little lady” and two little girls that in his eyes could do no wrong! Beyond his family, Dave found and embraced ways to serve – he served his church and his workplace, as an American Sign Language interpreter for the deaf. Hands and fingers flying fast of endless stories, coupled with the gigantic warm smile that forced a smile in return. He served his church as a minister, where saints were often enveloped into meaningful and applicable sermons; his story telling was unmatched. On Sunday Mornings, Dave taught Sunday School to tween boys – it was every boy’s longing to reach the age of “Bro. Dave’s class”. There, his Bible stories came to life, interactive and delivered with passion (with a side of heaps and heaps of donuts). David served as a Chaplain to the VFW Post of Owosso, providing counsel to young vets, coordinating needs, visiting, and providing much needed guidance. He was nothing short of proud of the opportunity to serve his country and the many facets of military service. Beyond serving the country, he had a heart for taking the family to see the country, as many parts as possible – tales of Branson, Gatlinburg, Disney World and Alaska were not uncommon in the Dumond home. As long as he was taking “his little lady” and the family, he wanted them to enjoy life and embrace the adventure. At home, he was a master “tinker-er”, he loved to transform an ‘old, broken-down car’ and bring it back to life again. But, what really transformed him back to life again (after ‘the little lady” and the girls that could do no wrong) was the grandkids. All six of them, Hunter, Hannah, Haydyn, Elise, Chania and Josiah. Beginning in 2004, every Friday night was a sleepover at Popper and Grandma’s house. Every grandchild earned a pet nickname, played countless games of Monopoly, went roller-skating or whatever their hearts desire – being bored was unthinkable. On Saturday morning’s, “Popper” served as smorgasbord chef. Each child was prepared their own favorite breakfast and fed plenteously. His every-Saturday-morning quote to the grandkids was, “don’t be a sniff-n-tosser!” The copious amounts of food was made to be eaten and eaten abundantly. After breakfast, there was always a trip to the dollar store for the grandkid shopping spree. The dollar store in Corunna is now known affectionately as “the thousand dollar store”, thanks to Popper. Dave leaves behind to cherish his memories and continue his legacy: his “my little lady”, Charis; daughters, Charita (Shawn) Willey, Tamara (Brian) Dumond-Peterson; brother, Larry (Esther) Dumond; grandchildren, Hunter, Hannah, Haydyn and Chania Willey, Elise Dumond-Peterson and Josiah McKinnies; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donna and Leroy Dumond, his son Jeremy and sister, LuAnn.
