DEVINE, Thomas Alvin, Jr., of Flint Township, age 70, died Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Heartland Briarwood. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services for family and close friends will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Glad Tidings Tabernacle, 4475 South Linden Road, Pastor Brian Oswald and Lt. Col. Anthony Dennis officiating. Final interment will occur later at Great Lakes National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be accepted in honor of Tom Devine at the Michigan Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Department Charitable Foundation, 17779 E. 14-mile Rd, Fraser, MI 48026. Tom was born March 26, 1951 in Flint, the son of the late Tom, Sr. and Norma (Bachman) Devine. He was a graduate of Flint Southwestern High School. After high school, Tom joined the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam from 1970 – 1971. During his tour in Vietnam, he began as a 60 gunner on a track called “Track of My Tears,” he moved on to become the driver of a Sheridan tank called “Hazel” and then volunteered to be a sniper. Tom was wounded twice and received two purple hearts. After Vietnam, he got his degrees in mechanical drafting and business administration from Mott Community College. He was draftsman for Champion Home Builders and then worked for H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh as a mechanical engineer. Later in life, in 1990, he joined the Michigan Army National Guard where he spent his time as a team leader, competitor, and instructor before he medically retired in 1998. Tom help create the Buddy-to-Buddy program, a citizen soldier peer support program to counteract stigma, PTSD, depression, and suicide, through the University of Michigan, 2008 - 2011. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Stage 3 in October 1988, as a result of exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam and had a bone marrow transplant in January 1998. In his youth, he was a tournament level chess player, an avid hunter, skier, golfer, and bowler. He loved tinkering with his elaborate model train display, John Wayne movies, heading up north to the cabin in the Harrison area for a weekend, and attending functions held by The Independent Order of Foresters with his family. He married Donna Mullins on July 19, 1985. She was a woman who helped him plant his feet a little more firmly on the ground. He will be missed by all, but we take comfort knowing he is no longer in pain or suffering and at peace with his parents. Tom is survived by his wife, Donna; daughter, Jenny Devine; sister, Barb (Larry) Williams; brother, Ron (Lori) Devine; nieces and nephews, Thomas Williams, Debra Heins, Ron Devine, Jessica Newbold, and Justin Oskey.
