Shaheen, Joseph – age 100, of Flint, died peacefully on Thursday January 3, 2025. According to Joe’s wishes there will be no service. His ashes will be spread in his beloved Douglas Lake at a later date.
Joe was born August 3, 1924, in Flint, the son of the late Abraham and Helena (Mansour) Shaheen. Joe’s life adventures started when he lied about his age and joined President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” Civilian Conservation Corp at age 16. He spent a year at Camp Gibbs near Iron River in the upper peninsula wearing WW1 uniforms, living in a tar paper shack and helping build fire towers, erect roads and plant trees – millions of trees. Upon returning to Flint, he worked at Buick for a short time before joining the Army where he was a member of the 9th of the 19th North Carolina Infantry Division. He landed in Casablanca, walked across Tunisia and participated in the invasion of Sicily where he saw extensive action until wounded by shrapnel on August 3, 1943 - his 19th birthday. Joe was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service to his country. When he returned from the war his forever revolving mind had him in more adventures and business that can be listed here. From card and pool rooms early on, to building houses, developing real estate properties, asphalt and gravel trucking, music promoting (Minnie Pearl and Duke Ellington), owning racehorses and running gambling junkets to name a few. Joe enjoyed building and operating multiple bars and restaurants in the Flint area like the Track Lounge, Ali Baba and the Aladdin Supper Club. Joe’s greatest joy however were the endless summers spent on Douglas Lake in northern Michigan with wife Marge, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many cigars and drinks were enjoyed around the near nightly bonfires.
Joe married the love of his life, Marjorie Wiles on 10/04/1952. Joe and Marge raised four children, Val (Karen), Stephen (Maribeth), Joseph Jr (Susie) and Tina Slaman (David). Grandchildren Jason Shaheen (Nicole), Robert Shaheen (Denny), Stephen Shaheen Jr, Sarah Cohen (Kala), Joseph Shaheen III (Felicia), Megan Joersz (Jordan), Matthew Slaman (Karli), and Adam Slaman (Ashley). Great grandchildren Gavin, Gabe, and Claire Shaheen, Sam and Maya Cohen, Joseph Shaheen IV, Bowen Joersz, Quinn and Henley Slaman.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, parents Abraham and Helena, in-laws Earl and Georgia Wiles, brothers Louis (Elizabeth), John (Jeanne), Shaheen (Rose), Mansour (Elsie), Sisters Anne (Joseph) David, Louise (Joseph) Rizk, and Marie (Louis) Daher, and special friend Kay Springer.

I've lived a life that's full I travelled each and every highway And more, much more than this I did it my way
Regrets I've had a few But then again, too few to mention I did what I had to do And saw it through without exemption
