Jeffery Mason Payne (Jeff) (September 13, 1954) died July 9, 2023 of after a protracted battle with cancer. He was a loving husband and father. Jeff was born in Flint, MI at McLaren Hospital and attended Kearsley Schools (K-12). He went on to the University of Michigan-Flint earning a Master’s degree. For over 50 years, he was heavily involved in Boy Scouting in the Kearsley area as a scout and later, as an adult leader. In recent years, he served at the Unit, District, Council, Area, Regional and National levels, advocating for Scouts with Disabilities. He was also heavily involved with the East Flint Lions Club, serving as their President and Treasurer.
Jeff worked for EDS (Electronic Data Systems) / General Motors for 15 years as a computer programmer and headed a group on the Y2K Project, then switched careers and worked as a high school teacher in the Flint Public Schools for 14 years before retiring in 2014. In his spare time, he was fanatical about Michigan football and hockey and the Red Wings and Pro football. He was also a lifelong Tigers fan and played hockey for U of M in Ann Arbor.
Having lived in the Kearsley area his entire life, Jeff and his wife, Pam, moved to Florida in 2016. He was always an enthusiastic proponent of the space program, and enjoyed going to numerous rocket launches while there and did a lot of sunning at the pool. Having tired of the “good life” there, Jeff and Pam moved back to Michigan in 2021 to be near family and friends, residing in Flushing.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley Willian Payne and Leetha Verena (Mason) Payne. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Jane (Hawks) Payne, stepsons James Cocking, and Randall Cocking, stepdaughter Cristine (Cocking) LaPorte, and daughter, Aileen Payne. He was also loving Grandpa to 13 grandchildren.
Jeff has chosen cremation. There will be a Memorial Service at Hill Funeral Home in Grand Blanc on Thursday, July 13, 2023. Visitation is from 2:00-3:00, with the Memorial Service starting at 3:00.
