George M. Atherton, age 83 of Durand, passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021 at Pleasant View in Owosso. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Walworth will officiate the service with a private burial to follow in Yerian Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 11:00 am until the time of service.
George was born on May 3, 1938 in Durand to the late Harold and Edith (Russell) Atherton. George served his country faithfully in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged in 1959. Following his service, George went on to work for Grand Trunk Western Railroad, retiring from there in 1992 after 28 years of service. George married the love of his life, Gertrude, in Durand on June 5, 1971.
George had a passion for trains and the railroad. He spent many years as a greeter at the Durand Depot following his retirement. He was a member of the Durand AmVets Post 2273 and the Durand Eagles Club.
George is survived by his children: Elizabeth (Robert) Downer of Durand, Terry (Beth) Baker of Florida, Janet Arnett of Owosso, Susan (John) Patsey of Durand, Bonnie (retired Colonel Wade) Tolliver of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gertrude, on July 7, 2004 and his son, Dennis Baker.
