Sarah Catherine Frey, age 83, of Flint, died April 7, 2022, at home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, 2022, from 4pm -8pm, Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Rd Flint, MI. Tributes may be shared at www.swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.
Sarah was born May 19, 1938, in Hamlet North Carolina, the daughter of Raymond D. Batton Sr. and Flora (Elmore) Batton. She married Arthur Frey of Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1954. Together, they had four daughters. In the mid 1960’s, she relocated to Flint, Michigan where she briefly worked for General Motors and began a 30-year on and off again career working for dear friends, the Todorovsky family, at the Ritz Lounge and Atlas Coney Island. During this time, she met Norman Wallace of Burton, MI and together, they shared two daughters. She was a passionate, civic-minded woman always fighting for social justice.
Sarah had a deep love for the open road and her family. She spent years traveling between Idaho and Michigan with several detours along the way. Her desire to stay in any one place for very long was much like the weather, changing by the hour. However, in 1990 she managed to slow down long enough to obtain her high school diploma, where she was honored to give the valedictorian commencement speech at her graduation.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Roger) Gonzales; daughter, Nancy (Rodney) Cleverley; daughter, Peggy (Dave) Underwood; daughter, Carol (Michael Graham) Frey; daughter, Suzzanne (Kevin Quaderer) Frey; daughter, Roseann (James) Neises; sister, Lynda Hoeft-Buckler; thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Sr., and Flora Batton; brother, William Batton; brother, Earl Batton; brother, Raymond Batton II; ex-husband, Arthur Frey; and Norman Wallace.
