LAITALA, Marcella A. of Flint, age 94 passed away peacefully Wednesday May 7, 2014 at her residence, surrounded by her family. Marcella was born in Malta, Montana on November 23, 1919 to John and Katherine Huneke. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northern High School in 1937. Marcella retired from GM Ternstedt in 1982 after 30 years of service in quality control. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church for 30 years and was a Eucharistic Minister for 10 years. Marcella was a loving mother and grandmother!
She is survived by 1 son and 5 daughters. Jack (Hope) Laitala of Empire, MI, Gail (Roger) Genshaw of Petoskey, MI, Carol (Larry) Dreasky of Flushing, MI, Diane (Bob) Esia of Traverse City, MI, Denise (Randy) Shourd of Flint, MI, and Cathy (Matt) Ellis of Tawas City, MI., 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Special thanks to her caregivers Callie Page, Sherry Crow, and longtime caregiver and friend Carrie Bridges.
Marcella was preceded in death by her husband Toivo, grandson Rick Genshaw, sister Vera Ringlein, sister-in-law, Martha (Boots) Brady and her beloved companion, her cat Bailey.
Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday May 9, 2014 at Holy Redeemer Church 1227 E. Bristol Road. Burton, Michigan, Father Steve Anderson officiating. Interment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Marcella's family will receive visitors at Swartz Funeral Home of Flint Township, 1225 W. Hill Rd. On Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 1-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Marcella will be at the church 10:30 a.m. Friday until the time of the Mass.
Contributions may be made to The Holy Redeemer Educational Trust Fund.
