HALSTEAD, Douglas E. – of Burton, age 74, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 402 S. Ballenger Hwy., Flint, Pastor Jeffrey B. Walsh officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 AM – 2 PM and 4-8 PM Thursday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Doug was born in Flint, MI on April 14, 1939, son of the late Don and Pat (Wirick) Halstead. He married Laura Dearlove in 1992. Doug proudly served his country for four years in the U.S. Navy. After serving his country, he became a firefighter for the Flint Fire Department in 1967. Doug ended his career at the Flint Fire Department as the Battalion Fire Chief. He went on to become the Fire Chief for the City of Burton Fire and Rescue for 17 years. Doug was the President of the Southeastern Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, a member of the Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs, a lifetime member of the Genesee County Association of Fire Chiefs, member and past president of the Burton Rotary Club, member and past chairperson of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and belonged to the Flint Elks Club #222. His favorite hobby of all time was golf. Doug also loved to hunt, fish and being outdoors. Above all else, the most important thing to him was spending as much time with his family and friends.

Doug is survived by his wife, Laura; children, David (Diane) Halstead, Darrin Halstead, Danielle LaForest, Rob (Andrea) Robinson, Kim (David) Crawley, Richard (Cheryl) Robinson, Randy Robinson, Desiree Robinson; granddaughter, Elizabeth Jerrolds, daughter of Danny Jerrolds, who holds a very special place in his heart; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Judy (Ron) Dodge; many nieces and nephew; special friend who was like a brother, Roger Osborn. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Joyce; son, Robert Robinson. The Burton Fire Department was so important to Doug, his “Troops”, Firefighters, were part of his family. He always claimed they were “The Best”. Tiene Deal, his devoted Secretary and friend was always there for him at the Department and continued to stay by his side, as his friend.
