ELSTON, Sarah E. – of Flint, MI, age 81, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2022. Sarah was born in Lansing, MI on January 8, 1941 to the late George and Margaret (Davey) Prescott. As the second oldest, and only daughter of six children, she helped raise her four younger brothers on the family farm.
Sarah’s family eventually sold the farm and moved to Tawas, where Sarah attended Tawas High School. She played basketball and loved to sing with her beautiful soprano voice. As a young woman, Sarah traveled to New York City to sing with her older brother Al at the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. Sarah was invited to audition for Juilliard School of Music, however she declined. Although, she was fiercely independent, smart, and talented, Sarah was not comfortable performing in public. Sarah did continue to sing and play the piano throughout her life – eventually singing in the choir at Mt. Morris Community Church where she was a long-time member. She loved music and was always happy to oblige her family with an impromptu piano concert.
At age 21, Sarah graduated from Ferris Institute’s printing program. At that time, she was one of only three women to have completed studies in this field. While attending Ferris, Sarah also worked as a linotype operator for the Reed City newspaper. Upon graduation, she went to work at the Flint Journal later working at the Kearsley School District and the State of Michigan, where she retired in 2002. In her retirement, she worked as a Medicaid specialist with an estate-planning attorney.
Sarah was an avid bridge player -- competitive and aggressive -- she played to win. Woe to anyone who trumped her ace! Sarah loved to swim; her favorite swimming hole was Cedar Lake at the home of her brother Dave and his late wife Nancy. Sarah had a kind and generous heart and would welcome anyone into her home. She was a great woman of faith and loved her church family. She spent many happy years with the Senior Saints at Mt. Morris Community Church, singing in nursing homes, making Christmas boxes for Samaritan’s Purse and participating in many other volunteer activities.
Sarah especially loved her children and grandchildren. She was blessed to spend many healthy years with them -- playing school, taking them up north to the beach, shopping and binge-watching Father Brown. In Sarah’s life, her greatest treasure was her family.
Sarah is survived by three daughters, Carmen (Brett) Moyer, Elizabeth (Frank) Hazen, Jennifer (Garrett) King; grandchildren, Sydney and Ryley Hazen, Chloe King; brothers, Davey Prescott, Craig (Barbara) Prescott, Bert Prescott; many other loving family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her; brothers, Frank Prescott and Al Prescott.
