ATKINSON, Robert L. – of Davison, MI, age 80, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023. A Funeral Service will be held 12 PM Monday, November 20, 2023 at Davison Free Methodist Church, 502 Church Street, Davison, MI 48423; Pastor John Vannest officiating. Cremation will take place following the service. Inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive visitors 4-7 PM on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423 and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Assoc. or Davison Free Methodist Church.
Robert was born in Flint on February 25, 1943, son of late Jesse and Mary (Roberts) Atkinson. Bob graduated Davison High School in 1961, he then attended Mott Community College briefly before entering and graduating from GMI (Kettering University) in 1968. Upon graduation, he enlisted with the United States Air Force. Bob served at Vandenberg AFB in California. During his time in California, Bob attended and earned his Masters Degree in Science and Systems Management from University of Southern California. He married Sharron “Sherry” Hovey in 1968 and two daughters were born of that union. They divorced in 1984. Bob then married Yvonne Rodgers on July 26, 1986, adding two sons to the family. He worked at AC Spark Plug for 37 years, retiring in 1998. Bob also taught math classes at Mott Community College. He found teaching to be a passion, and eventually retired in 2009. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed selling car parts at swap meets, planted and sold perennials, he enjoyed his flower gardens. Bob also found joy in visiting garage sales and auctions where he collected many treasures. He loved being outdoors while golfing and fishing. Bob served on the Board of Directors for Davison Oil and Gas as President. He also served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors at Leisure Lake in Durand. Bob and Yvonne took many trips to Washington DC, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Cancun and a cruise to the Bahamas; but the best trip was the one they took to Europe with their grandson, Nicholas, as chaperones for the Davison Choir. They also enjoyed camping throughout Michigan. Bob enjoyed life to its fullest, and loved his family with his whole heart.
Robert is survived by his wife, Yvonne Atkinson; daughter, Jeslyn (Dave) Gordon; two sons, Chad (Angie) Rodgers and Tony (Amy) Rodgers; grandchildren, Nicholas (Kerrie) Atkinson, Alex Gordon, Brianne Gordon, Morgan Grissom, Mason (Keya) Rodgers and Thomas Rodgers; several great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Arvie Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and lifelong good friends. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly Atkinson; brother, Jerry Atkinson; sister, Rayma (Roger) Miller.
