VATER-DARNTON, Rita Carol – Of Flushing, age 85, died Saturday, March 26, 2022 at University Hospitals in Ann Arbor.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2022 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Leonard Meizlish officiating.
Those desiring may make contributions to the Flint Community Players, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan or charity of one’s choice.
Visitation 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Rita was born in Niagara Falls, New York on February 2, 1937, the daughter of the late Irving J. and Augusta Grass.
On December 20, 1980 she married Robert H. Darnton in Flint, Michigan.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Michigan Education Association, Michigan Democratic Party and the Flint Community Players.
Rita was the current Chairperson of Glear (Retired Educators) and of the Genesee County Jewish Democratic Caucus.
She loved reading, cooking for large family gatherings, taking cruises, long walks, dancing, listening to live music and appearing in community theater productions.
Surviving are husband, Robert H. Darnton of Flushing, MI;
children, Ilene Vater of Key West, FL,
Suzan (Steve) Berry or Iron City, TN,
Daniel Vater of New York, NY,
Robert H. Darnton III and Guinevere Chan of Hermosa Beach, CA;
granddaughter, Brittany (Andrew) Moore and their children, Lucca Moore and Gannon Moore, all of Livonia, MI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Irving and Augusta Grass; son, Michael Vater and brother, Dr. Lawrence Grass.
