PONOMARENKO, MYKOLA “NICK”– Of Flint, age 82, died Monday, February 3, 2025 at the LaVigne Home for Compassionate Care.
Funeral service will be held 11am Friday, February 7, 2025 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 2143 S. Center Road, Burton, Father Matthew-Peter Butrie officiating.
Visitation 9am Friday at church until the time of the service.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church or International Orthodox Christian Charities.
Mykola was born in Bohodukiv, Ukraine on November 1, 1942, the son of the late Ivan and Evdokia Ponomarenko. Mykola “Nick” left Ukraine as a toddler during World War II. My parents were taken by the Germans as forced labor in 1944. My grandmother, Paraska watched him while she cleaned the barracks. My parents worked in a factory. It was a difficult life, not enough food to eat and fear of the German soldiers.
In 1945, the war ended and the American soldiers came. In 1951, our family came to the U.S.A. on a Navy ship.
Nick thought it was an adventure. We almost went to Australia, but he broke his leg and wasn’t able to travel. The ship to Australia sank. We thank God that we were not on that ship.
Nick graduated from Flint Northern in 1960 and after he attended Michigan State University. He worked as a Social Worker and Teacher. My sister, Cathy and I (Lucy) always thought of him as our big brother. After his divorce, he lived with his parents and helped them.
He married and had two daughters.
Surviving are daughters, Chrissy (Bradley) Tomlinson and DeAnna Burgos;
sisters, Lucy Hogg and Cathy (George) Suhaj;
five grandchildren;
many nieces, nephews and relatives who reside in Ukraine.
