NELSON, Leslie Darrell, Jr. – of Davison, MI, age 79, passed away while surrounded by family on Sunday, July 15, 2018. A Funeral Service will be held 10 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Bishop Keith McKinnies officiating. Interment immediately following the service in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 4-8 PM Monday, July 16, 2018 and 9-10 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Allen Funeral Home. A Memorial Luncheon will be held for Family and Friends following the burial at 12:30 PM Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Little Caesars Pizza, 1081 South State Road, Davison, MI 48423. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in Darrell’s memory.
Darrell was born in Flint, MI on December 2, 1938, son of the late Leslie Darrell Nelson, Sr. and Vera Mae (Hall) Nelson. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Kay Marie McGuire on February 7, 1959 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and they were married 50 years until her death on December 29, 2009. As commander and chief of our family, Darrell was the organizer extraordinaire of family reunions and wrote the book on the family’s genealogy. He had degrees from Mott Community College and an Engineering degree from Eastern Michigan University. Darrell retired from General Motors with more than 25 years in Fisher Body and AC Delco. Darrell was a former president of the Flint Genealogical Society and was passionate about conducting genealogical research. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, bowling, driving his 1932 Ford, his dog Scooter, tinkering with computers in his Den of Antiquity and was a longtime member of Scientology. Darrell was quick witted and spared no details when story telling. He was kind, generous and a beloved Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Brother, Son and Husband. Darrell always sought to see the best in others and was my hero.
Darrell is survived by his 4 children, Kathryn (Michael) Drumm of Flushing, MI, Theresa Suchodolski of Flushing, MI, Dr. Matthew (Dr. Melissa Alexander) Nelson of Illinois and Blair (fiancé, Blair Hayes) Nelson of Boyne City, MI; 7 grandchildren, Tim and Kaylee Suchodolski, Raquell Conley, Jacob Drumm, Josh and Abby Nelson and Emilee Hayes; 3 great-grandchildren, Braylen, Gracie and Hunter; nephew, Bob Nelson; niece, Terri Nelson; grandniece, Alizabeth Nelson; many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; son, Timothy; brother, Richard and his parents.
