Robert Gerald Custer, age 71, of Owosso, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after his
battle of many years with heart disease and COPD.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Shiawassee Conservation Association, where family and
friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate Bob’s life.
Bob was born on March 9, 1955, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, to Robert Custer and Geraldine (Kriesche) Simpson. He attended Owosso High
School and raised his family in the same community.
On July 28, 1973, Bob married his lifetime love and best friend,
Deborah Penrod, in Owosso. Together they shared nearly 53 years of
marriage, creating countless, cherished memories.
Bob fulfilled his lifelong dream of being an OTR Trucker, a career he
proudly dedicated 45 years to. Outside of work, he embraced the
outdoors and the simple things in life. A lifetime member of the
Shiawassee Conservation Club, he enjoyed hunting, watching NASCAR, and
riding his Harley with his wife and the Harley-Winged Rider’s.
One of his greatest joys was teaching his grandchildren archery and
how to hunt, passing along his love of the outdoors while creating
cherished memories forever. More than anything, Bob valued family
time. Whether he was telling stories, teaching life lessons, or making
sure everyone cleaned their dinner plate, those were the moments he
held near and dear. His quiet strength, generous heart, and love for
his family will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Deborah Custer; his
daughters, Michelle Custer-Hier (Jason) and Christina Bush; his
grandchildren, Molly (Danny), Emma, Kyra, Morgan; great-grandchildren,
Aden, Max and Piper; brothers, Alan (Jackie) Custer, and Michael
Custer; his brothers-in-law, Glen Reffitt, Jack Penrod, Mike (Yvonne)
Penrod, and Roger Penrod; his sisters, Jeannie (Tim) McCanns, Julie
Baker, and Cathy Evans; mother-in-law, Esther Penrod; as well as many
nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Custer and Geraldine
(Kriesche) Simpson; his stepfather, Eugene Archer; his sister, JoAnn
Reffitt; and his brothers, Ed Custer and Scott Custer, father-in-law,
JR. Penrod.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
