Tom was born November 6, 1952, in Saginaw, to William and Peggy (Thorsby) Poag. He graduated from Montrose Community Schools and worked as an over the road truck driver for most of his life. Tom served his country with honor in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He had a deep appreciation for classical rock music, and he liked to keep up with all Michigan sports teams – especially the Detroit Lions. Beyond music and sports, Tom had a gift for lightening the mood and making people smile. Those who knew Tom understood that he had a laid-back nature and a positive outlook on life. He had a way of making everyone around him feel comfortable and cared for. One of the tremendous accomplishments in Tom's life was his commitment to A.A. for fifteen years where he found strength to help not only himself, but many others. Tom loved going on trips up North and to the U.P. with his wife, Dawn. He didn’t mind going to a casino or two either. Tom enjoyed his annual golf trip with the guys every year. He was a man who embraced the simple joys in life. Tom’s family was his pride and joy. He treasured every moment spent with them. Whether it was the annual baseball game with his children and grandchildren or cheering them on from the sidelines, Tom's love and support knew no bounds. He will be missed.
Tom is forever loved by his beloved wife, Dawn (Schroeder) Poag; Children: Kris (Angela) Poag, Tricia (Gus) Maxa, and Hollie (Matt) Valley; Grandchildren: Haley, Ava, Jackson, Jayden, Luke, Austin, Mia, and Tommy; Beloved mother, Peggy Poag; Stepson, Matthew Thompson; Step-grandson, Dorian; Many extended family members and wonderful friends.
