Kenneth Grant McLaren, 90, of Marlette passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3,
2025, with his loving family at his side.
Kenneth was born December 20, 1934, to the late Grant and Blanche (Perry) McLaren.
He attended Marlette High School and graduated with the class of 1954. Kenneth
married Patricia Claire Redmond on June 6, 1959, and they celebrated 63 years
together.
Ken worked at General Coach and managed Manufacturer’s Warehouse before earning
his insurance license. He then sold insurance from his agency, Simonson-McLaren, in
Sandusky, Michigan, for over 40 years. Ken served on the Chemical Bank Board for 20
years and was an active member of the Sandusky Kiwanis Club. Ken was an avid
sportsman and enjoyed hunting locally and throughout the western United States. As a
hobby, Ken received a personal pilot’s license, and he owned and flew a Super Viking.
He and Pat traveled (not by a Super Viking) throughout the U.S. and ventured further to
Italy and Germany, and also enjoyed Alaskan and Rhine River Cruises. They were
lifelong members of Marlette Second Presbyterian Church. After retirement, Ken and
Pat spent many years in Bonita Springs, Florida, where they enjoyed golfing, playing
cards and socializing with family and friends. Ken and his wife Pat were their grandkids’
biggest fans and supporters—no matter the location, weather, or time of day, they were
proud and present. Ken loved to attend morning “committee meetings”….as long as
they included a large round table full of friends, hot breakfast and coffee, funny stories
and a good joke or two. Ken was a generous man and liked to support local events and
programs. He believed in getting up (and going to bed) early and keeping a well-
manicured lawn. Ken had a soft spot for any cat or dog, appreciated a firm handshake,
preferred dress shoes for any occasion, thought you were late if you weren’t a half hour
early, and encouraged his family to always have a full tank of gas.
Ken is survived by his son, David “Mark” McLaren; daughter, Susan Solgat;
grandchildren, Lily (Weston) Appold, and Logan Solgat.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife Patricia; parents, Grant and Blanche (Perry)
McLaren; two brothers, Clayton McLaren, Leonard McLaren; and son-in-law, Gerald
Solgat.
