Betty was born in Munger, Michigan on November 27, 1935 to the late Richardson and Mary Alice Gage. She enjoyed growing up on the family farm with her 4 late siblings. Her brother Dick, and sisters Alice, Jean, and Phyllis. From a young age Betty was adventurous and stylish. When she was 13 years old she would work in the fields pulling potatoes and picking beans to earn money for shoes and purses. Though her formal education came from an old country school in Fairgrove, life experiences would be her greatest teacher.

Betty met the love of her life Oscar Donohue, at a party hosted by her aunt. This encounter was quietly arranged by her parents and Oscar’s brother. As fate would have it, that moment started a lifelong love story. The two were married on September 24, 1955. Oscar’s job with the Railroad led them to Saginaw beginning their newlywed journey. An impending family brought them to Grand Blanc where they built a beautiful life together, raising 2 sons Gordon and Gary in their lovely home with an impeccable yard. Betty’s green thumb kept stunning flowerbeds and an abundant garden. She loved to share the fruits of her bounty. Countless memories and many friends were developed in her community over the years. Together Betty and Oscar shared 63 years of marriage.

Betty’s faith was central to her life. She was a devoted member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Burton for 58 years. She stayed active in many aspects of the church throughout that time. Betty led the Missionettes, taught Sunday school, and beautifully decorated the sanctuary, just to name a few. Prayer was always her guiding light.

Betty was a wonderful wife, caring mother and total domestic diva. She began working as a Baker for Grand Blanc Schools in 1966. She delighted students with her homemade breads and famous “sticky buns”. Her gift for baking continued in her personal life as she often created one-of-a-kind cakes for family and friend’s special events. After 29 years in the school system, she retired her rolling pin. Her kitchen skills continued in retirement especially during the Holidays when she gifted many delicious Christmas cookies, breads, and candy. Her recipes are treasured.

Betty was an incredibly creative and talented woman. Whether she was crocheting, crafting, sewing, painting, or solving puzzles, she brought beauty and flair to everything she did. Betty could sew or make just about anything. If you asked her for it, she would find a way to make it! Proving how capable and resourceful she really was.

A true fashionista Betty loved jewelry and often made unique pieces herself. Among her hobbies, she enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers. A pastime she shared with her late husband. Her giving spirit and loving nature shown through the most when spending time with her family. Especially her grandkids and great grandkids, they stole her heart. There’s been many games played, crafts made, baking secrets taught, and fun times spent at Grandma’s house.

Surviving to cherish Betty’s memory are her sons Gordon Donohue, and Gary(Cindy)Donohue, her grandchildren Sarah(Jason)Kagen, Rachel Donohue and Fiancé Brandon Germundsen, and Justin(Laura)Donohue, her great-grandchildren Tyler and Gavin Kagen, Oaklie, Parker and August Donohue, and Jaxon James Germundsen.

Lockwood of Burton has been Betty’s home for the past 7 ½ years. She’s kept busy playing Bingo and cards, doing crafts, attending church, and enjoying social hour. The staff and residents have treated her like family. Especially supportive after Oscar had passed. She loved making treats and baked goods to share with the community. They all called her “Baker Betty”. Her family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her Lockwood friends for not only loving her but for their kindness shown to us during this difficult time. The appreciation is further extended to Compassus Hospice of Grand Blanc for your loving care and guidance.
